Air Alight – Dianne’s Skype

Day 96/126

Dianne’s now had her Skype session, and shared her notes with us.   We’ve had some questions about the ensemble in this piece, because there are two groups throughout.  There is Robert, the soloist, and the people playing alto, bass and piccolo are a trio that frequently moves with him.  Then there are the other 3 of us, our effects create the backdrop or “cloud” behind the trio + solo.  Dianne was able to clarify that in the beginning the cloud begins, and then overlaps with the trio’s entrances.

One of the last sections of the piece contains a lot of multiphonics, at the top of the page he even says “GROOVE MATERIAL”, with a metronome marking of quarter = 76-80.  Robert told Dianne that this has a jazz character to it.  Everyone’s parts at this point alternate multiphonics and multiphonic/residuals.  After the residuals, the directions don’t explicity state to go back to just plain multiphonics.  Robert said yes, we should.  This is why I love this process, it’s like an amazing puzzle.  It is simply wonderful to be able to consult the composer to make sure we are honoring his intentions.
